OHS Summer Reading List 2010-2011

(NOTE: ALL BOOKS ARE SELECTED BY THE OHS ENGLISH DEPARTMENT FROM THE HAMILTON COUNTY BOOK LIST, EXCEPT FOR AP ENGLISH LITERATURE. STUDENTS COMING TO OHS ARE EXPECTED TO READ FROM THIS LIST. IF YOU READ A BOOK OTHER THAN THOSE ON THIS LIST, YOU MUST SPEAK TO YOUR ENGLISH TEACHER DURING THE FIRST WEEK OF CLASS.)

 

Grade 12

 

AP/DE English (choose two)

·          Catch-22 by Heller

·          East of Eden by Steinbeck

·          Jane Eyre by Bronte

·          Song of Solomon by Morrison

·          Their Eyes Were Watching God by Hurston

·          How to Read Literature Like A Professor by Foster* (Required purchase for AP Literature by first day of class, but is not a summer reading choice.)

All students will complete a dialectic journal for each selection. Journals will be due on first day of class. (See back of sheet for instructions). Journals will be due in first week of class.

 

English 12 (choose one)

·          1984 by Orwell

·          Brave New World by Huxley

·          Lord of the Flies by Golding

·          How to Read Literature Like A Professor by Foster* (Required purchase for English 12 by first day of class, but is not a summer reading choice.)

You will have a test on your book during the first three weeks of class. You will have to answer questions about the book and write a summary and personal reaction essay.

 

Grade 11

 

AP English Language and Composition (all)

·          Elements of Style (50th Anniversary Edition) by Strunk & White

·          Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass by Douglass

·          Ethan Frome by Wharton

·          The Grapes of Wrath by Steinbeck

All students will complete a dialectic journal for each selection. Journals will be due on first day of class. (See back of sheet for instructions).Journals will be due on the first day of class. Additional assessment of these selections may be objective, short answer, performance based or essay in nature.

 

Honors English 11 (both)

·          Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass by Douglass

·          Ethan Frome by Wharton

All students will complete a dialectic journal for each selection. Journals will be due on first day of class. (See back of sheet for instructions). Journals will be due on the first day of class. Additional assessment of these selections may be objective, short answer, performance based or essay in nature.

Honors English 9 (read two)

·          Breaking Rank by Randle

You will have a test on your book during the first three weeks of class. You will have to answer questions about the book and write a summary and personal reaction essay.
